Battered by leaders I had trusted – devastated, grieving, shunned – I cried out to God. He pointed me to a familiar Bible story. I searched, as for hidden treasure.
I found an overcomer. In a land whose leaders had given themselves to evil, Elijah gave his heart wholly to God. His life has shown me much about how to live fully and love fiercely even when evil seems unstoppable.
In addition, I saw two faces of evil. For Elijah lived where Ahab and Jezebel ruled. Cruelly, brutally, Ahab and Jezebel worked in tandem, like a two-headed snake. We can think we know them – yet completely miss them – because they knew how to hide in the fog that evil creates.
I had completely missed what was right in front of me – fooling me, using me, compromising me – until it was devouring me. Then, finally, I began to see it and to recognize how it was devouring others too.
What I’ve learned from Ahab and Jezebel about evil, what I’m learning from Elijah about overcoming, I’ve written in The Elijah Blessing: An Undivided Heart, updated 2025.
Please, Lord, teach us how to overcome evil with good!
